How to delete your Zoom account permanently

How do I delete my Zoom account?
Cancel any paid plan, download your cloud recordings, then delete from Account Management in the web portal. Recordings are erased and cannot be recovered.
The moment you confirm
Reversible: Nothing — Zoom states the account is permanently deleted. Fully gone: Immediate. Paid plans must be cancelled and the billing cycle finished before the account can be terminated at all.

Cloud recordings are erased. Interviews, lectures, client calls — anything stored in Zoom's cloud rather than locally goes with the account. Download everything and verify the files play before you delete.
If your account is managed by an employer or school
You probably cannot delete it, and should not try. Accounts under an organisation's Zoom plan are controlled by that organisation's admin. Ask them to remove you instead — attempting deletion yourself will simply fail.
Before you delete
- Download cloud recordings and transcripts.
- Cancel your paid plan and confirm billing stopped — a plan cancelled at the wrong point in the cycle still bills.
- Note your Personal Meeting ID is released; anyone with old calendar invites gets a dead link.
- Warn recurring attendees — standing meetings break immediately.
Only free accounts can be deleted directly
This is the detail that stops most people, and Zoom states it plainly: a Basic (free) account can be terminated at any time. A paid one cannot. If you are on a Pro, Business or Enterprise plan you must cancel the subscription first and wait until the current billing cycle has actually ended — not merely cancel it, but sit out the remainder of the period you already paid for.
Until that cycle closes, the Terminate option will not complete. People read that as a bug and try again in a different browser; it is the documented behaviour.
Delete your account
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal — this cannot be done from the desktop or mobile app.
- In the navigation menu, open Admin, then Account Management, then Account Profile.
- Click Terminate My Account.
- Enter your password when prompted.
- Confirm.
You are redirected to the Zoom homepage with a brief confirmation. The account is permanently deleted at that point — there is no grace period and no restore.
The Admin level in that path is the step most guides omit, and it is why people report that Account Management "is not there". On a personal Basic account you are the admin of a one-person account, so the menu exists even though it reads like an enterprise feature.
Your cloud recordings are on a separate clock
Recordings do not simply vanish the moment you delete. Zoom moves deleted cloud recordings to a trash that holds them for 30 days, after which they are permanently gone and cannot be recovered by Zoom support or anyone else.
That 30-day window is a recovery net, not a licence to be slow — and it only helps you if you still have an account to sign into. Once the account itself is terminated, the trash goes with it.
Download first, verify second, delete third. Play the downloaded files before you terminate anything. A recording that downloaded as a zero-byte file is indistinguishable from a good one in a folder listing, and by the time you notice, the original is unrecoverable.
If your account is under an organisation, a retention policy may already be deleting recordings on a schedule you did not set — commonly 150 or 365 days from creation. Anything past that date may be gone before you get to it.
Cancel, or delete — the cheaper answer first
Most people asking how to delete Zoom want to stop paying for it, which is a different action. Downgrading a paid plan to Basic keeps the account, the meeting ID and the contacts, and costs nothing per month.
- Paying and not using it? Downgrade to Basic. The account survives and so does your PMI.
- Worried about recordings sitting on Zoom's servers? Delete the recordings specifically — that empties the thing you actually object to without touching the account.
- Just want the notifications and invitations to stop? That is a settings and email-preferences problem.
Deletion is the right call only when you want Zoom to stop holding an account for you at all — and on a paid plan it is the slowest option, because the billing cycle has to run out first.
What else goes with the account
- Your Personal Meeting ID is released. Every calendar invite that contains your PMI becomes a dead link, including recurring meetings other people organised.
- Scheduled meetings stop existing — including ones where you are the host of a series other people rely on. Hand hosting over before you go.
- Cloud transcripts and chat logs attached to recordings go with the recordings.
- Your Zoom-linked contacts and any saved meeting settings.
Common questions
Can I delete a Zoom account given to me by my employer?
No. Organisation-managed accounts are controlled by that organisation’s admin, who must remove you. Deletion attempts by the user will fail.
