How much of your life is social media taking?

How much time does the average person spend on social media?

Roughly 2.5 hours a day worldwide, which is about 38 days a year of waking time. At 4 hours a day it becomes 61 days a year — two full months. Enter your own number below.

2.5 hours
38days per year
5.4weeks per year
4.2years over 40

How this is calculated

Hours per day × 365 days ÷ 24 hours = whole days per year. The "years over 40" figure projects the same daily habit across 40 years of adult life. It counts every hour, including the ones you would have spent asleep — the honest framing, and the one that makes the number comparable across people.

Counting only waking hours, which some calculators do to inflate the result, gives a figure roughly 50% higher. We do not do that.

What the number actually means

Not all of it is recoverable. Some of that time is genuine connection with people you care about, and some is the only downtime in an otherwise packed day. The useful question is not the total — it is what share of it you would defend if asked.

A more revealing exercise: check your phone's own screen-time report rather than guessing. Most people underestimate by 40 to 50%, and the gap between your guess and the real number is the actual finding here.

Common questions

How many days a year does 3 hours a day add up to?

About 46 days a year — a month and a half of continuous time. Over 40 years that is roughly 5 years.

Is the average really 2.5 hours a day?

Global averages from industry trackers have hovered around 2 to 2.5 hours for several years, with younger users well above that. Your phone’s screen-time report is a far better source than any average.
