How to delete your Steam account permanently

This deletes every game you have ever bought. No transfers, no recovery — and no automatic refunds, though there is a refund step worth taking first. A library built over a decade can be worth thousands, and Steam is explicit that deletion is irreversible. Almost nobody who asks this question actually wants it.

What you probably want instead

• Stop the emails — unsubscribe in notification preferences.
• Hide your activity — set your profile and game details to Private in privacy settings. Your library stays, nobody can see it.
• Remove payment methods — deletes the card, keeps the games.
• Just stop logging in — Steam does not delete dormant accounts, so your library waits for you.

Each of these solves the actual problem without destroying the library.

If you genuinely want it deleted

1. Go to Steam Support and sign in.
2. Open the account-deletion help topic — deletion is a support request, not a settings toggle.
3. Provide comprehensive proof of ownership. Steam demands this rigorously precisely because deleted accounts cannot be recovered, and a hijacker deleting someone's library would be catastrophic.
4. Wait for Steam Support to review the request.

Ask for refunds before you delete, not after. Steam says deleting does not automatically refund anything — but that you can apply for refunds on qualifying purchases through the Help Site first. Recent purchases are the ones worth checking. Once the account is gone there is nobody left to ask.

You get 30 days, and cancelling is not obvious

Once the review passes, Steam restricts the account for 30 days and queues it for deletion. The restriction bites immediately: no purchases, no community features, and any game needing a VAC server stops being playable. You are not simply waiting out a countdown — most of the account is already gone.

To cancel: log in, open the red notification at the top of the page, and click cancel. It is not in settings and there is no email link — if you do not know to look at that banner, you will not find it.

Your forum posts stay up

Steam removes your personal information, but not everything you posted in community areas. Discussion posts, Steam community hub content and comments left on other people's profiles all remain after deletion.

If your goal is erasing things you wrote years ago, deletion will not do it — remove those posts by hand first, while you can still log in.

What deletion removes

• Every game, DLC and in-game item. Steam states plainly that games requiring a Steam account will not be playable afterwards — permanently, with no compensation.
• Your Steam Wallet balance — spend it first, it is forfeited.
• Trading cards, inventory and market items — including anything with real resale value.
• Friends, reviews and achievements.
• Any product key you ever redeemed. Keys registered to the account become invalid — the code is spent, and it does not return to you as something you could redeem again elsewhere.

Retail keys do not survive either

People with a shelf of boxed PC games, or a folder of Humble Bundle keys, sometimes assume those are the safe part — that the account is just a launcher and the licences are really theirs. They are not.

A key is a one-time token that binds a licence to an account. Once redeemed it is consumed, and deleting the account destroys the licence it created without releasing the key. The box on your shelf becomes cardboard, and the bundle you bought becomes a receipt for nothing.

There is no route to move a licence to a second Steam account. Not by asking support, not by proving you own both, not by showing the original purchase. This is the single fact that makes Steam deletion different in kind from almost everything else on this site: the loss is permanent, quantifiable, and frequently in the thousands.

Why "just stop logging in" is genuinely fine here

Steam is one of the few platforms where abandonment is a reasonable strategy rather than a delayed disaster. Valve does not delete accounts for inactivity, so a library left alone for a decade is still a library.

That makes the sensible middle path unusually attractive:

• Remove your payment methods so nothing can be charged.
• Set the profile, game details and inventory to Private so nobody can see any of it.
• Turn off every email notification.
• Enable Steam Guard and make sure the recovery email is one you still control — an abandoned account is exactly the kind that gets hijacked, and yours is worth money.
• Then walk away. Nothing expires, nothing is deleted, and the games are there if you ever want them.

The only reason to prefer deletion over this is if you specifically want Valve to stop holding your personal data. That is a legitimate reason — it is just an expensive one, and it should be a decision rather than an accident.
