How do I delete my Cash App account?

Cash out your balance, sell any Bitcoin or stocks, then close the account from your profile settings. Cash App blocks closure while funds or investments remain.

After you confirm

Reversible: Not stated — the closure article names no window. Fully gone: Not stated; Cash App says it keeps transaction records for legal compliance and fraud prevention.

You cannot close the account until you have cashed out. Cash App states this outright: closing requires you to Cash Out all funds first. Bitcoin and stocks are not the same as your cash balance, and people routinely empty the balance, assume they are finished, and forget investments sitting in the same app. Cash App does not name them specifically, but you cannot cash out what is still held as Bitcoin or shares — so sell or transfer those first either way.

A linked personal or business account is closed with it. If you have both, closing one closes the other, and Cash App requires you to cash out the funds in that account too. Anyone running a business account alongside a personal one should expect to lose both in a single action.

Before you close

Close the account

With the app installed:

  1. Tap the profile icon on your Cash App home screen.
  2. Tap Support.
  3. Tap Account & Settings.
  4. Tap Close Your Cash App Account.

Closing also signs you out of every session and stops the account receiving payments straight away.

Already uninstalled the app? Cash App closure still routes through Support. You can call (800) 969-1940, open daily 8am–9:30pm ET — which is the practical option, since their chat route asks you to reinstall the app anyway.

You lose your $Cashtag and your transfer history. The $Cashtag is how people pay you, and the history is what you would need for tax or for evidence of a payment. Download your statements before closing — there is no retrieving them afterwards.

Cash App also treats an account as inactive if it has gone more than two years without use and holds no money, and may close it.

Block, which operates Cash App, is a regulated financial business and retains transaction records after closure.

Bitcoin and stocks are the part that takes days, not minutes

The cash balance is instant. The investments are not, and this is where a closure that felt like a five-minute job turns into a week.

Selling is a taxable event; closing the account is not a way to avoid it. Every disposal you make on the way out has to be reported, and Cash App reports it too. Liquidating a portfolio to close an account can produce a tax bill in a year you were not expecting one — worth checking before you sell rather than after.

Get your tax documents while you still have an account

Cash App issues tax forms for investment and Bitcoin activity, and those forms are the evidence you need for what you sold and what you paid. Once the account is closed you have no dashboard, no download button and no login.

What Block keeps afterwards

Block, which operates Cash App, is a regulated money business. Anti-money-laundering rules oblige regulated firms to retain customer identification and transaction records for a period after the relationship ends — five years is the standard baseline in the US and the EU.

Closing the account therefore stops you using Cash App and stops Cash App being used to reach you. It does not erase the record, and no request will. The asymmetry is the point worth taking away: they keep it, you lose access to it, so take your copy first.

Common questions

What happens to my Bitcoin if I close Cash App?

Sell it or transfer it to an external wallet before closing. Investments and Bitcoin sit separately from your cash balance and will block closure if left behind.
