How to delete an Instagram account without the password

Be careful what you search for here. Services claiming to delete an Instagram account without the password are, without exception, either scams or credential-harvesting. There is no third party that can do this. Everything below goes through Instagram directly.

Route 1 — you still have the email or phone number

This resolves most cases in a couple of minutes.

1. On the login screen, tap Forgot password?
2. Enter your username, email or phone number.
3. Open the reset link Instagram sends and set a new password.
4. Log in, then follow the standard deletion steps.

Route 2 — you have lost the email and phone too

Instagram can verify you by other means. Expect this to take a few days.

1. On the login screen, tap Forgot password? then Need more help?
2. Choose I can't access this email or phone number and give a contact address you do control.
3. Follow the verification Instagram requests. For an account with photos of you, this is usually a short video selfie so they can match you to the images. For an account without your face, expect questions about the email address and phone number used at signup, and the approximate creation date.
4. Once you are back in, delete the account.

The video selfie is only used for verification and Instagram states it is deleted within 30 days. It is not posted anywhere.

If the account was hacked

Start at instagram.com/hacked rather than the normal reset flow. It handles the case where an attacker has changed the email and phone number, which the standard reset cannot. Recover the account first; then you can delete it if you still want to.

If it is not your account

You cannot delete an account belonging to someone else, and no legitimate route exists to do so. What you can do:

• Impersonation of you: report it at instagram.com/impersonation. You will need photo ID.
• An old account of yours you cannot access: use Route 2 above.
• A deceased person's account: Instagram has a dedicated process for memorialising or removing it, which requires proof such as a death certificate or obituary link.

Why no bypass exists, and why that protects you

It is worth understanding the reasoning rather than just accepting the rule, because it explains why every "delete without password" service is necessarily a scam.

Password confirmation on deletion exists so that someone who gets ten seconds with your unlocked phone cannot destroy your account. If Instagram accepted any weaker proof, the weakest proof would become the attack — an ex-partner, a jealous acquaintance or anyone who briefly had your device could erase years of photos. The friction that is frustrating you today is the same friction that has been protecting you the rest of the time.

So there is no legitimate third party, and there never will be. A site offering to delete an Instagram account without the password is asking you to hand your credentials to a stranger, or charging for something it cannot do. Both outcomes are worse than the problem you started with.

Before you start the recovery

Recovery goes faster when you approach it from the right device, and slower when you fight it from a new one.

• Use a phone that has logged into the account before. Instagram trusts a familiar device, and the recovery flow is noticeably smoother from one.
• Try the app before the website. The app can sometimes offer a login from a saved session that the browser does not know about.
• Check your password manager and your browser's saved passwords before assuming the password is gone. It very often is not.
• Look for old Instagram emails — a "new login" or "welcome" message confirms which address the account is on, which is half the battle.
• Do not create a new account to ask for help. It does not speed anything up and can complicate the identity check.

Once you are back in

The point of regaining access is not only deletion. If you got locked out because you lost an email address or a phone number, fix that first — otherwise you are one step from the same problem on whatever account you keep.

1. Update the email and phone to ones you actually control.
2. Turn on two-factor authentication and save the backup codes somewhere that is not the phone.
3. Download your data if there is anything on the account worth keeping — photos, messages, the follower list.
4. Then decide whether you still want to delete. A lot of people who wanted the account gone actually wanted it back, and only wanted it gone while they could not reach it.
