How to delete your WhatsApp account permanently

Uninstalling the app does not delete your account. People keep messaging you, the messages pile up undelivered, and you still appear in everyone's contacts. You must delete from inside the app before uninstalling — and if you have already uninstalled, reinstall and log back in to do it properly.

Export your chats first

WhatsApp deletion is immediate — there is no grace period at all — so the export has to happen first.

1. Per chat: open the conversation, tap the contact name, then Export chat. Choose whether to include media.
2. Everything: Settings → Account → Request account info, which takes a few days to prepare.

Voice notes and disappearing messages are the usual casualties. Export the conversations that matter individually rather than trusting the bulk request.

Delete your WhatsApp account

It has to be your primary phone. Deletion cannot be done from a linked device — not WhatsApp Web, not a companion tablet, not a second phone. If your primary phone is lost or broken, you will need to restore WhatsApp onto a device first.

1. Open WhatsApp on your primary device and go to Settings.
2. Tap Account, then Delete my account.
3. Enter your phone number in full international format, including the country code — it will not accept it otherwise.
4. Tap Delete account.
5. Select a reason from the dropdown, then tap Delete account again to confirm.

What deletion removes

• Your message history on your device and your account.
• All your groups and communities: you are removed from every one. Groups and communities you created carry on without you — WhatsApp says deletion does not affect their names or details.
• Your Google Drive or iCloud backup.
• Your profile photo and About text.

Messages you sent stay on the recipients' phones — that is inherent to how the app works and no setting changes it.

WhatsApp states it may take up to 90 days from the start of the deletion process to remove your information from its systems, and that it cannot restore or transfer chats, documents, media, backups or call history from a deleted account.

Changing phone number instead?

Do not delete. Use Settings → Account → Change number, which migrates your groups and tells your contacts. Deleting and re-registering loses everything and is the single most common WhatsApp mistake.

What your contacts see afterwards

Deletion is quiet. Nobody is notified, and the app does not announce that you have gone — which means people work it out slowly and often wrongly.

• Your chat thread stays in their app, with the whole history intact. They keep everything you ever sent.
• Your profile photo and About disappear, so the thread goes blank-faced. This is what most people notice first, and it is also what a block looks like — expect to be assumed to have blocked people.
• Messages sent to you fail to deliver. One tick, forever. No error, no explanation.
• You vanish from groups, but groups you created carry on with their names and details unchanged.

If the relationships matter, tell people directly before you delete. There is no in-app signal that distinguishes "left WhatsApp" from "blocked you", and the app will let them draw the wrong conclusion indefinitely.

If you are giving up the phone number too

Delete the account before you give up the number, not after. Numbers are recycled by carriers, and WhatsApp registration is tied to whoever can receive an SMS on that number. If you abandon a number without deleting WhatsApp, the next person issued that number can register on it — and while they do not get your message history, they can end up in your groups and appear to your contacts as you.

This is the strongest practical reason on this page to delete properly rather than just walking away. It is also the reason to turn on two-step verification while you still have the account: it puts a PIN in front of any future registration attempt on your number.

Re-registering later gets you nothing back

You can register the same number again whenever you like, and people sometimes assume that makes deletion semi-reversible. It does not. You get an empty account: no messages, no groups, no backup, no profile. WhatsApp is explicit that it cannot restore or transfer chats, media, backups or call history from a deleted account.

The only thing that survives is other people's copies of your old conversations, which you cannot reach.

WhatsApp Business is a separate decision

If you run a WhatsApp Business account, deleting takes the catalogue, the business profile, the away messages and the labels with it. Customers messaging your published business number get nothing back and no explanation.

Where a business number is printed on packaging, vehicles or a shopfront, deletion is a change your customers find out about by being ignored. Redirect them first — change the business profile to point somewhere else and give it a few weeks before deleting.
