How to delete your Duolingo account permanently

Cancel Super Duolingo first — Duolingo says so explicitly. Deleting your account will not suspend charges for a subscription bought through the app, because Apple or Google manage that billing. Cancel the renewal before you start the erasure.

Step 0: Request Your Duolingo Data Archive

Use the Duolingo Data Vault to request a download before erasure. Wait for it to arrive, save it outside Duolingo, and check the archive opens before you confirm deletion.

Delete your Duolingo account

It is not in account settings, which is where most guides send you. Deletion runs through the Duolingo Data Vault, and it removes your Duolingo, Duolingo for Schools and Duolingo ABC accounts together.

1. Open the Duolingo Data Vault and request erasure of your account and personal data.
2. Check your email. Duolingo sends a message to your account address — you must click the Delete my data confirmation link or nothing happens.
3. Wait. Erasure can take up to 30 days.
4. Duolingo emails you again once it is complete.

On iOS you can also do it in the app: Profile → Settings (gear icon) → scroll to the bottom → Delete account.

How to Cancel the Duolingo Deletion Grace Period

The cancellation link lives in the same email you used to confirm. You have 7 days to stop the erasure, and that email is the only route to it — so do not delete it the moment you have clicked confirm.

Your streak does not come back

A streak is the one thing people genuinely mourn here, and it is not recoverable. Nor is your XP, league placement or course progress. Re-registering starts you at day zero on every language.

If it is the notifications rather than the app you want gone, turn those off in settings instead — it solves the actual annoyance and keeps a streak that might represent years.

What Happens to Super Duolingo, Progress, and Balances?

App-store billing continues until you cancel it with Apple or Google. Once erasure finishes, your streak, XP, course progress, gems and purchased items are permanently lost.

• Your streak, XP and league history — permanently.
• All course progress across every language.
• Friends and followers.
• Gems and purchased items — forfeited.

If you want a break instead of permanent deletion

Choose the action that fits your aim. Deletion removes your learning record; changing notifications or cancelling a paid plan addresses a different problem.

• The notifications. Turn them off entirely, or reduce them to one a day. Changing notifications does not require you to erase your learning record.
• The streak anxiety. Turn off streak-related reminders, or use a streak freeze so a missed day stops being a catastrophe.
• The leagues. Leaderboards can be turned off, which removes the competitive nagging while leaving the lessons.
• The cost. Cancel Super and drop to the free tier. The account, the streak and the progress all survive.

A streak is genuinely unrecoverable, and support will not restore one on a deleted account. If there is any chance you will come back to the language, log out and delete the app instead. Check paid subscriptions separately. Keeping an account does not itself cancel a renewal, and future data availability depends on the provider.

Deleting takes the other Duolingo accounts too

The erasure covers Duolingo, Duolingo for Schools and Duolingo ABC together, which matters for two groups of people:

• Teachers. A Duolingo for Schools classroom goes with your account. Tell your students, and export whatever progress records you need for reporting first.
• Parents. A child's ABC account attached to yours goes as well. If the intention was to remove your own account and leave theirs, check how they are linked before you request anything.

Erasure can take up to 30 days to complete, but the window to stop it is only 7 — those are different numbers and only the shorter one is a decision point. Keep the confirmation email until that week has passed.

The Data Vault does more than delete

The same place that handles erasure also handles the gentler requests, and they are worth knowing about because most of them solve the problem people actually have.

• Download a copy of your data before you erase anything, so the record of what you studied survives even if the account does not.
• Review your export and store it somewhere outside the account you plan to close.
• Check the confirmation email and keep its cancellation link until you are sure you want to proceed.

Requesting the download first is worth the extra few days. Once the erasure completes there is nothing left to export, and the confirmation email that lets you cancel is also the last thing you will receive from them.
