How do I close my Revolut account?

In the app, tap your profile icon in the top-left corner, select Account, then Close account. Revolut requires every balance at zero and a checklist of other conditions met first, and once closed you cannot get back in.

Money hides in more than one place. Revolut requires that all your accounts, Pockets and currency accounts sit at zero. A few euros left in a currency you used once on holiday will block closure, and it is the last place anyone thinks to look.

Switch to Standard instead — Revolut offers this first

If the reason you are leaving is the monthly plan fee, Revolut's own article opens by suggesting you downgrade to the Standard plan and keep the account. It costs nothing per month and keeps your details alive. Worth ruling out before you close something you cannot reopen.

The closure requirements

Revolut will not let the process start until all of these are true:

The US edition of the article adds no credit obligations as a separate line. Several of these apply to customers aged 18 and over only.

Download any statements you want to keep before you start — that part is Revolut's own advice, and it is the piece nobody remembers until they need it for a tax return.

If your balance is too small to transfer out

This is the trap that leaves people stuck: the account must be at zero, but the leftover is under the minimum for an outbound transfer. Revolut documents three ways out — top the account up until it clears the minimum, send it to a friend on Revolut as an internal transfer, or donate it through the in-app Donations feature.

Close the account

  1. Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner.
  2. Select Account.
  3. Tap Close account and follow the prompts.

Revolut emails a confirmation once the process finishes. After that you cannot access the account again.

Revolut retains some of your data after closure — its article points to the Customer Privacy Notice for the detail. Closing stops your access; it does not erase the record.

Your IBAN stops existing, and money sent to it fails

For anyone using Revolut as a main account rather than a travel card, this is the part that causes real disruption. Closing the account retires the account details, and anything pointed at them afterwards has nowhere to land.

Run the two accounts in parallel for a full billing month. Open the replacement first, move everything over, then wait a month and watch what still arrives at Revolut. Whatever turns up in that month is the thing you would otherwise have discovered by losing it.

Statements: get them before, not after

Revolut's own closure advice says to download your statements first, and it is worth understanding why the warning is there. Once the account closes you cannot log in, so there is no route to a statement other than asking support to produce one, with identity checks, for an account that no longer exists.

Take, at minimum: monthly statements for every year you held the account, records for every currency account separately, and any annual tax or interest summaries. If you ever used Revolut for anything self-employed, take the lot.

Revolut is a regulated financial institution, so the retention runs the other way too: anti-money-laundering rules require customer identification and transaction records to be kept for a period after the relationship ends — five years is the baseline under EU rules. You lose access to the record; Revolut does not lose the record.

Locked out of the app?

If you have lost the phone or cannot log in, closure is not self-service. Revolut directs you to email support@revolut.com and expect identity checks.

Expect this route to be slow, and do not treat an unclosed account as harmless in the meantime. If the phone is lost rather than replaced, the more urgent job is freezing the cards from another device or through support — closure can wait until you are back in control of the account.

Common questions

Why won’t Revolut let me close my account?

It is a checklist, not one condition. Every account, Pocket and currency balance must be zero, with no pending transactions, no active subscriptions, chargebacks, insurances or Kids & Teens accounts, your investment account closed and your plan downgraded to Standard.

What if I have too little money left to transfer out?

Revolut suggests topping the account up to clear the outbound minimum, sending the remainder to a friend on Revolut, or donating it through the in-app Donations feature.
