The data rescue checklist

How do I download my data before deleting my account?

Every major platform has a "Download your information" tool in account settings. Request the export first, because files take hours or days to generate and the download link stops working once the account is deleted.

Request every export before you delete anything. Files take between a few hours and several days to build, and the download link dies with the account. This is the single most common irreversible mistake.

Tick items off as you go — your progress is saved in this browser, so you can close the tab and come back.

How long each export takes

PlatformTypical waitFormat
InstagramA few hours to 48hHTML or JSON
FacebookA few hours to 48hHTML or JSON
TikTok1–3 daysTXT or JSON
X (Twitter)24h or moreBrowsable HTML
SnapchatUp to 24hHTML + media

Choose HTML over JSON if the platform asks — HTML opens in a browser and is readable years later. JSON is better only if you plan to process it with code. Where offered, pick the highest media quality; the default is often compressed.

Common questions

How long do I have to download my data after deleting?

Assume zero. The download link generally stops working as soon as the account is deleted, and it certainly will not survive the grace period. Always export before you delete.

Should I choose HTML or JSON format?

HTML for almost everyone — it opens in any browser and stays readable. Choose JSON only if you intend to process the data programmatically.

Does the export include my direct messages?

Usually yes for standard messages, but disappearing messages, voice notes and some media are commonly excluded. Screenshot anything that genuinely matters.
