How to delete your Evernote account permanently

There is no grace period and no undo. Evernote is unusually blunt about this: the action is not reversible, your content will not be retrievable, and the account will not be accessible any more even by Customer Support. Every note, notebook and tag goes at once. Whatever you want to keep, you have to take out before you click.

Export first, in a format you can reopen without Evernote

Evernote exports notes and notebooks as ENEX or HTML, and notes as PDF. ENEX preserves the most detail but almost nothing else reads it well. If these are notes you want in ten years, export HTML too — it opens in any browser, forever, with no software required.

• Export every notebook, then open a few files and check the attachments came with them.
• Check shared notebooks — collaborators lose access to ones you own.
• Save web clips you rely on; many point at pages that have since changed or vanished.

Cancel your subscription — this is required, not advice

If you have a paid subscription you must cancel it before closing the account, and that means cancelling auto-renewal even on a free trial. Evernote also warns that closing a paid account mid-subscription does not automatically clear an open balance, and that its refund policy applies in all cases of closure. Deleting the account is not a way to walk away from what you owe.

Check you are deleting the right account

Evernote raises this itself, which suggests it happens: if you have more than one Evernote account, sign in and look at the contents before you close it. Check the email address on the account you are about to destroy.

Close your account

1. Sign in to your account settings on the web.
2. Click Account security in the left-side navigation.
3. Click the blue Close account link.
4. Follow the prompts to permanently close and delete the account.

There is also a privacy web form route — choose "I want to delete my account" under "How can we help you?". If this is a Teams account, it is not self-service: the Teams administrator submits the request, and Teams users should go to their administrator.

Where your notes can actually go

Because there is no undo here, the export is not a formality — it is the whole thing. Deciding where the notes are going before you export tells you which format to take.

• Obsidian and most Markdown apps import ENEX through a plugin or converter. Test the conversion on one notebook before you commit to it.
• Apple Notes and OneNote have their own Evernote importers, and they handle attachments better than a generic Markdown conversion does.
• A folder of HTML files is the option that needs no software and will still open in 2040. Unglamorous, and the only one with no dependency.

Export twice, in two formats. ENEX for fidelity and HTML for longevity. The cost is disk space; the alternative is discovering in a year that the importer you chose silently dropped your attachments, with no account left to go back to.

The parts of an export people find missing later

• Note history. Previous versions of a note are a paid-plan feature and they do not export — only the current version comes out.
• Reminders and due dates often do not survive conversion into another app, even when the note text does.
• Web clips export as they were captured. That is usually a good thing, since many of the original pages have changed or gone, but the formatting can be rough.
• Shared notebooks you do not own are not yours to export, and you lose access when the account closes.
• Local-only notebooks exist on one device and were never synced, so they are not in any server-side export. Find them on that machine specifically.

Open a handful of exported notes at random and check the images and PDFs are really there. An ENEX file with missing attachments looks completely normal until you open it, and by then Evernote has told you plainly that support cannot help.
