How to delete your Telegram account permanently

The confirmation code arrives in the Telegram app, not by SMS. If you have already uninstalled it, reinstall and log in first, or you will not be able to complete deletion.

Telegram specifically recommends doing this on a desktop browser rather than a phone. Reaching the deactivation page on mobile tends to bounce you into the app instead of loading the form.

Delete via the web form

1. Go to telegram.org/deactivate.
2. Enter your phone number including the country code.
3. Telegram sends a confirmation code as a message inside the app — open Telegram to read it.
4. Enter the code on the web page.
5. Confirm deletion.

Delete from inside the app

Newer versions expose this directly: Settings → Privacy and Security → Delete My Account → Delete Account Now. It does the same thing without the web form.

The self-destruct timer

This is already running, whether you set it or not. Telegram deletes any account that has not come online for 18 months by default, along with every message, media file and contact in its cloud. So an account you abandoned two years ago and never deleted is very likely gone already.

Telegram is unusual in offering automatic deletion after a period of inactivity — Settings → Privacy and Security → Delete My Account If Away For. Set it to the shortest option and simply stop logging in, and the account removes itself. Useful if you want to leave without a decisive moment.

Telegram recommends using a desktop browser rather than a mobile one for the deactivation form.

What deletion removes

• All your messages, groups and contacts are flushed from Telegram's systems.
• The copies on other people's devices stay. Telegram is explicit that your contacts keep their copy of the messages you sent them. If you want messages that vanish from both sides, the self-destruct timer is the tool, not deletion.
• Groups and channels you created are orphaned — left without a creator — but existing admins keep their rights and the group keeps running.
• Secret chats: device-only, so they go with the app.

What happens if you come back

Termination is irreversible, and re-registering the same number does not restore anything. Telegram spells out what actually happens:

• You appear as a brand new user with no history, contacts or groups.
• Everyone with your number saved gets notified that you have joined Telegram — again.
• You show up as a separate conversation in their message list, with an empty history alongside the old one.

Export before you delete: Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram Data in the desktop app. The mobile apps do not offer a full export, so use Telegram Desktop for this.

Delete the messages, not the account

This is the part that makes Telegram different from every other messenger on this site, and it is why deletion is often the wrong tool here.

Telegram lets you delete messages for everyone, with no time limit. Not "unsend within 15 minutes" — you can go back to a conversation from years ago, select what you sent, and choose to delete it for both sides. It disappears from their app as well as yours. You can also clear an entire chat history for both participants in one action.

So if the reason you want to delete your account is a specific conversation you regret, deleting the account is the one thing that will not fix it — your contacts keep their copy of everything when the account goes. Removing the messages first is what actually works, and you can do it without leaving.

The order matters if you want both: clear the conversations for everyone first, then delete the account. Once the account is gone you have no way to reach a message on someone else's phone.

Channels, groups and bots you own

Orphaning a channel is not neutral. The channel keeps running and existing admins keep their rights, but nobody can be promoted to owner afterwards, and certain owner-only actions become impossible for good.

• Transfer ownership properly before you go, rather than relying on an admin having enough rights. Telegram supports transferring a channel or group to another user.
• Bots you created are tied to your account through BotFather. If a bot serves other people, hand it over or warn them it will stop being maintainable.
• Public usernames attached to your channels are released when the channel is deleted, so a name you built an audience on becomes claimable.

Telegram Premium is billed elsewhere

If you subscribe to Premium through the iOS App Store or Google Play, deleting your Telegram account does not cancel it — the billing relationship is with Apple or Google, and neither of them knows your Telegram account is gone.

Cancel in the store first, confirm the end date, then delete. This is the same trap as everywhere else on this site, and it costs the same amount of money to ignore.
