How to close your Coinbase account permanently
By Otabek Mamadaliev · Sources last reviewed · What this means
How do I close my Coinbase account?
Withdraw every balance to zero, then close the account from account settings. Coinbase blocks closure while any crypto or cash balance, pending transaction or open dispute remains.
The moment you confirm
Reversible: Nothing — Coinbase states closing your account is permanent and irreversible. Fully gone: Access ends immediately; Coinbase keeps some personal information for at least five years.

Withdraw everything first, and check every asset. Small balances in obscure coins are easy to miss, and Coinbase will not close an account holding funds. Anything left behind is a problem to unwind afterwards.
Cancel Coinbase One separately. The subscription is not ended by closing the account, so cancel it first or it keeps charging. This is the same trap as Reddit Premium and X Premium — a paid tier that outlives the account it was attached to.
Download your tax records — you will need them
This is the one people regret. Transaction history and tax reports are required for filing in most countries, and disposals can be taxable events years after the fact. Once the account closes, retrieving that history ranges from painful to impossible.
Export your full transaction history and any tax documents before closing, and store them somewhere permanent.
The dust problem
Balances too small to cover the network fee cannot be withdrawn. Coinbase requires every balance at zero, so leftover dust in obscure coins will block closure outright. Your options are to send it if you can, donate it to GiveCrypto.org, or forfeit it and let Coinbase zero the balance.
Check every asset, not just the ones you remember buying — small amounts arrive from staking rewards, promotions and referral bonuses without you noticing.
Close the account
- Withdraw all crypto and cash balances to zero. Allow up to 5 business days for this to complete.
- Wait for pending transactions to settle.
- Sign in and open your account profile.
- Click the Activity tab.
- Click Close Account at the bottom of the page.
- Enter your password and confirm.
Closing is permanent. If the account was never verified, Coinbase Support handles closure instead.
Coinbase is a regulated financial business and must retain certain records after closure regardless of your request. Closing stops the account; it does not erase the financial trail.
Your cost basis does not move with your crypto
This is the expensive one, and almost nobody is warned about it. When you send coins off Coinbase to a wallet or another exchange, the assets arrive but their purchase history does not. The receiving platform has no idea what you paid or when you bought — so when you eventually sell, it cannot calculate your gain, and the burden of proving it falls entirely on you.
In most jurisdictions, including the US, moving crypto between wallets you own is not itself a taxable event, and your cost basis and holding period carry over. But "carry over" is a rule about how the tax is calculated, not a promise that anyone is tracking it for you. If you cannot show what you paid, you can end up taxed as though the basis were zero — which on a long-held position is the difference between a modest bill and a ruinous one.
So before you close:
- Export the full transaction history, not just the current tax year. Acquisitions from five years ago are the ones you will need.
- Export every tax document Coinbase has generated for you, from the Reports or Tax Documents section.
- Record the date and value of the outbound transfers themselves, so the trail from Coinbase to wherever the coins went is documented on your side.
- Keep acquisition records for as long as you hold the coins, and disposal records for at least five years after selling.
Why a regulated exchange cannot delete you
People close crypto accounts for privacy more often than for tidiness, so it is worth saying plainly what closure does and does not achieve.
Coinbase is a registered money services business. Anti-money-laundering rules require identification and transaction records to be retained for a defined period after the customer relationship ends — five years is the standard baseline in both the US and the EU, and longer in some jurisdictions. That obligation is not something Coinbase can waive at your request, and it is not affected by a deletion request of any kind.
Closing the account ends your relationship with Coinbase. It does not remove your identity verification documents, your transaction history or the on-chain record, which was public the entire time and remains so permanently.
If your goal is to reduce what a single company holds about you going forward, closing works. If your goal is to erase what already happened, no exchange can offer that, and the blockchain itself makes the transaction side of it impossible by design.
Common questions
Can I close Coinbase with crypto still in it?
No — every balance must reach zero. Dust too small to cover network fees cannot be withdrawn at all, so you must either donate it to GiveCrypto.org or forfeit it and let Coinbase zero the balance.
Will I still be able to get my tax records?
Assume not. Export your full transaction history and tax documents before closing — you may need them for years afterwards.
