How to delete your Tumblr account permanently

Deleting your primary blog deletes your entire account. This is the mistake people make, and the interface practically sets it up. Open the settings for any sideblog and there is a button at the bottom reading Delete [that sideblog's URL] — labelled with the blog you are actually looking at, so it reads like it will remove only that one. It deletes your entire account. If you only want a sideblog gone, do not touch it.

Deleting one sideblog without killing your account

If you are the only owner of a sideblog, delete it by going to its members page and leaving the group. That removes the sideblog alone.

And this one is not reversible. A deleted account can be restored for 30 days. A sideblog deleted on its own cannot be recovered at all — so the less drastic-sounding action is the more permanent one.

Back up your posts first

Tumblr offers an export of your blog under blog settings. For anyone who has posted original writing or art over years, do this before anything else — deletion is immediate and there is no grace period to reconsider.

Delete your Tumblr account

1. Go to Settings → Account.
2. Scroll to the bottom.
3. Click Delete account.
4. Enter your email and password to confirm.

Changed your mind? You have 30 days

Tumblr emails a confirmation with a restore link when you delete your account, and you can restore it yourself for up to 30 days. Keep that email until you are certain.

What happens to your posts

• Your posts are removed from Tumblr.
• Reblogs by other people stay — that is how Tumblr works, and you cannot claw them back.
• Your URL is released and can be claimed by someone else, which matters if your blog name is well known.
• Followers are gone and do not return.

Reblogs are the whole problem

On Tumblr, a reblog is a full copy, not a link. Every reblog of your post carries your text and images inside it, hosted on someone else's blog. Deleting your account removes your original and leaves every copy standing — and for anything that ever gained traction, the copies are the version people actually see.

This makes Tumblr one of the hardest platforms on this site to leave cleanly, and it is worth being honest about what is achievable:

• A post with a long reblog chain is effectively permanent. There is no mechanism to reach into other people's blogs, and no support request that will do it for you.
• Your username stays visible inside those chains, at the top of the reblog trail, even after the account is gone.
• Deleting posts individually first does not help for the same reason — the copies were made at reblog time.

The one thing that does work is prevention rather than cure: posts you never let out are the only ones you control. If specific old content is the reason you are leaving, accept that deletion reduces its visibility rather than removing it.

Back up before you touch anything

The export is per blog, and Tumblr assembles it in the background — it is not instant, and for a long-running blog with a lot of images it can take a while to become available.

1. Go to each blog's settings and request the export separately. There is no single account-wide backup.
2. Wait for the email and download the archive.
3. Open it and check the images are really in it, rather than referenced from Tumblr's servers — that difference only matters once the account is gone, which is exactly when you cannot fix it.
4. Do this for sideblogs too. They are separate blogs with separate archives, and deleting the account takes all of them.

Remember which action is which. A deleted account can be restored for 30 days. A sideblog deleted on its own cannot be recovered at all. The gentler-sounding option is the irreversible one, which is the reverse of what everyone assumes.
