How to delete your PlayStation Network account

Every digital game you own disappears. Your library, add-ons, PS Plus benefits, wallet balance and trophy history are all bound to the PSN account. Sony does not transfer purchases between accounts and does not refund them.

Do this instead, probably

• Remove your payment methods — stops future charges, keeps the games.
• Set the profile to private if the concern is visibility.
• Cancel PS Plus — that alone stops the recurring cost.

Closure is rarely the right answer for a library with any real value in it.

Family managers: closing your account closes every child account in your family. This is the most damaging thing on this page. If you manage a family group, your children lose their accounts, their games and their save data along with yours — and they may have no idea it is coming.

If you are certain

1. Spend your wallet balance — it is not refunded.
2. Cancel PS Plus and any subscriptions.
3. Open the PlayStation app and sign in.
4. Select Settings from the top of the home screen.
5. Scroll to the bottom and select Close Your Account.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Using the PlayStation Family app instead? The path is the same except that Settings is at the bottom of the home screen rather than the top. Worth knowing, because the two apps look similar enough that people hunt for a menu that is not where they expect.

You get a 30-day freeze

The account enters a 30-day freeze from the moment the request is received. At any point in that window you can reopen it — but only by contacting PlayStation Support and asking them to cancel the closure. There is no self-service undo, so do not assume logging in will fix it.

Sony retains certain transaction records after closure for legal and financial reasons.

Doing nothing is not the same as keeping it

Most people who decide against closing simply stop logging in and assume the library sits there indefinitely. It does not, and this is the least-known thing on the page.

PSN accounts left idle for 36 consecutive months can be closed by Sony. The terms reserve the right to delete an account after three years of inactivity. Sony emails the address on file first, and from that point you have roughly six months to sign in or ask for the account to be preserved — after which the account, and the digital library attached to it, can go.

Two practical consequences:

• The email address on the account has to still work. A warning sent to a university address you lost a decade ago is a warning you will never see. If you are mothballing an account rather than closing it, update the email first — it is a two-minute job that protects the whole library.
• Log in occasionally. Signing in resets the clock. An account you intend to keep needs to be touched, not merely owned.

This is the strongest argument against the "I will just leave it" plan, and the strongest argument for downloading and playing offline anything you genuinely care about while the account is still live.

What "owning" a digital game actually means here

Everything on this page follows from one fact worth stating directly: a digital purchase on PSN is a licence tied to an account, not a file you own. That is why:

• Games cannot be moved to another account, even one belonging to you.
• Wallet funds are not returned when the account closes — the money became credit, and the credit dies with the account.
• Trophies, save data and add-ons are attributes of the account rather than of you.
• Nothing is refunded on closure, because closure is treated as you giving up access rather than as a return.

None of that is unusual for the industry. It is simply the thing that makes closing a PSN account a materially different decision from closing a social media account — the loss is measurable in money, and it is not recoverable by any route, including asking nicely.
