How to delete your TikTok account permanently

TikTok deletion is app-only. TikTok documents one route and it runs through the app — if you have uninstalled it, reinstall and log in to delete. Treat any site offering to delete your TikTok for you as a phishing page, whatever it claims.

Download your data first. Once the grace period expires, your photos, videos, messages and contact list are gone with no recovery path. Our data rescue checklist walks through it in about 10 minutes.

TikTok data exports are not instant — the file takes days to be prepared. Request it before you start deleting, because the download link dies with the account.

Delete TikTok on iPhone and Android

The steps are identical on both platforms.

1. Open TikTok and tap Profile (bottom right).
2. Tap the ☰ menu (top right), then Settings and privacy.
3. Tap Account.
4. Tap Deactivate or delete account.
5. Choose Delete account permanently.
6. Pick a reason, then continue.
7. Verify your identity — SMS code, email code, or whichever method your account uses.
8. Confirm.

You have around 30 days to change your mind. The account is hidden immediately but not erased. Log back in during that window and it is restored in full. Stay away and deletion becomes permanent.

What gets removed

• Your videos: deleted, including drafts stored on the account.
• Duets and stitches of your videos: other people's versions containing your footage generally remain live.
• Coins and gifts: TikTok does not publish what becomes of an unspent balance, and you will not have an account to ask from. Spend it first and the question does not arise.
• Creator fund earnings: withdraw any pending balance before deleting.
• Your username: assume it is gone for good. TikTok does not commit to releasing it back or holding it for you, so do not delete on the assumption you can reclaim the handle.

If you make money on TikTok, cash out first. Pending balances are not paid out after deletion.

Abandoning the account is not deleting it. TikTok's inactive account policy says an account unused for 180 days may have its username reset to a randomised number — but the account and its data stay. If your reason for leaving is the data rather than the handle, walking away does the opposite of what you want: you lose the name and keep the profile. Deactivate is the option most people actually want

The same menu offers deactivation, and it is genuinely different rather than a softer-sounding synonym. Deactivating hides your profile and videos from everyone while leaving the account and its content intact underneath, and you reverse it simply by logging back in.

If the reason you are leaving is that you want to stop using TikTok rather than that you want TikTok to stop holding your videos, deactivation does the job and costs you nothing.

Your footage outlives your account

Deleting removes your videos from your profile. It does not remove them from the internet, and on TikTok specifically the leakage is unusually wide:

• Duets and stitches are separate videos owned by other creators and stay live with your footage inside them.
• Downloads — anyone who saved your video to their camera roll has a copy you cannot reach, watermark and all.
• Reposts to other platforms are entirely outside TikTok's control, and popular clips are routinely mirrored to Reels, Shorts and X within hours.
• Comments you left on other people's videos are attached to their posts rather than to your profile.

If a specific video is the problem rather than the account, delete that video first and give it time. Removing the source is what stops further spread; deleting the whole account on top of it adds nothing.

If you have earned anything, do this first

The money side has no safety net once the account is gone, and there is no support queue to appeal to.

1. Withdraw pending creator earnings and confirm the payment has actually landed in your bank, not merely that you requested it.
2. Convert or spend Diamonds from gifts received.
3. Spend unspent Coins. TikTok does not publish what happens to a balance on deletion, and you will have nobody to ask.
4. Save your analytics if you use them to pitch brands — screenshots are the only export.
5. Export any brand-deal correspondence held in TikTok's inbox, which goes with the account.
