How to delete your Discord account permanently

Transfer your servers first. Discord will not delete an account that still owns a server. If you own one, you must either hand ownership to another member or delete the server outright — and deleting it destroys every channel and message in it for everyone.

Your messages stay in every server

Like Reddit, and unlike most social platforms, deleting your Discord account does not remove what you wrote. Your messages remain in every server and DM, reattributed to Deleted User. Discord does not provide a bulk message deletion tool.

If specific messages need to be gone, delete them by hand before you close the account. There is no way back in afterwards.

Delete your Discord account

1. Open Discord and click the gear icon next to your name to open User Settings.
2. Select My Account.
3. Scroll to the bottom and choose Delete Account.
4. Enter your password, and your two-factor code if you have 2FA enabled.
5. Confirm.

If deletion is blocked, it is almost always because you still own a server. Discord names the server in the error.

The other side of this: if a server you rely on belonged to someone whose account is now gone or inactive, Discord Support runs a server ownership transfer request process for exactly that situation.

You get 15 days

The account enters a pending deletion state for 15 days from the moment you confirm. Once those 15 days elapse the account is removed from Discord's systems and the deletion is irreversible.

Shorter than the 30 days most platforms give, and easy to let slip past. If you are unsure, disable instead — that has no clock on it at all.

Deletion also takes your purchases with it, along with access to your servers and every direct and group message.

Disable instead of delete

Disabling logs you out and hides your profile, but keeps everything and lets you return by logging back in and following the prompts. Deleting is permanent. Both options sit on the same My Account screen, and disabling is the right choice if you are stepping away rather than leaving.

Disabling also requires transferring your servers. This surprises people who assume the server rule only applies to deletion. And disabling does not cancel an active Discord subscription — Nitro keeps billing whether the account is disabled or not.

Before you go

• Discord Nitro: cancel the subscription separately, especially if billed through a mobile app store.
• Server ownership: transfer to a trusted member via right-click on their name in the member list.
• Request your data from Privacy & Safety → Request all of my Data. It takes up to 30 days to arrive, so start early.

The data request takes longer than the deletion window

Read those two numbers together: the data package can take up to 30 days to arrive, and pending deletion only lasts 15. Request your data and delete on the same day, and the account can be permanently gone before the download link reaches you.

So the order is not negotiable. Request the data, wait for it to actually arrive, check the archive opens, and only then start the deletion. Anyone who does it the other way round is relying on Discord being faster than its own stated timeline.

Transferring a server, properly

Handing over ownership is the blocking step for most people, and doing it badly hands a community to the wrong person permanently. There is no undo — once transferred, you are an ordinary member unless the new owner gives you something back.

1. Pick someone active and trusted, and ask them first. Transferring a server to a surprised person is how communities collapse.
2. Right-click their name in the member list and transfer ownership. You will be asked to confirm, and to complete 2FA if it is enabled on the server.
3. Check the server has other admins so it is not one account away from this problem again.
4. Then delete your account.

If the server is genuinely finished, deleting it is the honest option — but understand it erases every channel and every message for everyone, not just for you. That is a decision about other people's history, so tell them before rather than after.

What "Deleted User" actually leaves behind

Your messages stay everywhere, attributed to Deleted User with a generic avatar. That is a meaningful reduction in exposure and it is not erasure, and the difference matters if you are leaving because of something you said.

• The text is unchanged and remains searchable inside every server it was posted in.
• Context often re-identifies you — people reply by name, quote you, and remember. Anonymising the label does not anonymise the conversation.
• Images and files you uploaded stay hosted, and their links keep working.
• Servers keep their own logs, and many run bots that archive messages independently of Discord's own retention.

If specific messages are the problem, delete those messages by hand while you still have an account. It is tedious and it is the only thing that works.
