How do I close my Wise account?
Empty every currency balance, wait for pending transfers to finish, then go to Settings, open Actions and Agreements, and choose Close your account. If you close it by mistake you can log back in and reactivate it.
After you confirm
Reversible: Reversible — log back in to reactivate. Fully gone: No fixed window; regulated data retained.

Closing a Wise account is reversible. This is unusual enough to say first: if you close it by mistake, Wise documents that you can go to the login page, sign in with the same email and password, and follow the prompts to reactivate. That does not apply if Wise closed your account rather than you.
Tell anyone who pays you first
Wise gives you real local bank details in several countries, and employers, clients or marketplaces may have them saved. On closure, in Wise's words, your account details are deactivated and you will not be able to receive money. Anyone still paying into them needs new details before you close, not after.
Before you close
- Empty every currency balance. Open each currency holding money, choose Send, and move the full amount to a bank account outside Wise. Repeat for every currency — this is the step people do once and think is finished.
- Wait for pending transfers and card payments to complete, or cancel them. Card payments can sit as pending for up to a week after the purchase, so a recent tap is enough to hold the whole closure up.
- Update your card details anywhere you have saved them. The Wise card stops working, so any subscription billed to it fails.
- Download statements and transfer receipts you may need. Freelance income through Wise is reportable, and this is the moment to pull the records.
Wise cancels your Direct Debits as part of closing. You do not have to unpick them yourself, but you do need to know they are going.
Close the account
- Click your initials or photo in the top corner.
- Go to Settings.
- Under Actions and Agreements, select Close your account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Wise is a regulated financial institution and says it is required to store some of your personal data after closure, deleting what it no longer needs.
If the close option will not work
Wise publishes the three reasons this usually fails, and each has a fix:
- A few cents you cannot withdraw. Very small balances cannot be sent out yourself, and they will hold the closure up indefinitely. Wise's own instruction is to phone them and they will clear it for you — you do not have to forfeit it or find a workaround, which is the opposite of how crypto exchanges handle dust.
- An error in the app. Try the website instead; Wise suggests this before anything else.
- A duplicate account. Wise does not permit two accounts, so if you accidentally opened a second one under another email, one of them has to close. Contact them if you are not sure which you are in.
Business accounts close on your terms
If you have a Wise Business account as well, closing it gives you a genuine choice: close only the business account, or close the business and personal accounts together. That is worth saying plainly, because several payment apps take the decision away from you — closing your personal Cash App or Venmo profile takes the business one with it whether you meant that or not.
Before closing a business account, disconnect any accounting software you have linked, such as Xero or QuickBooks.
Your account details stop receiving money
Wise gives you real local account details in several currencies, and people use them as a salary or invoicing destination without thinking of them as a bank account. Closing deactivates all of them.
- Tell whoever pays you first — an employer, a client, a marketplace — and confirm the first payment has landed at the new destination before you close.
- Check every currency you were given details in, not just the one you use most.
- Move direct debits and recurring cards off the Wise card, which stops working with the account.
- Download your statements for every currency and every year. Once closed, you cannot log in to produce one.
Reopening is genuinely possible here, which is unusual. If you closed the account yourself, signing in with the same email and password lets you reactivate it. That does not apply if Wise closed it, and it is not a reason to be casual — but it does make Wise one of the more forgiving closures on this site.

Common questions
Can I reopen a closed Wise account?
Yes, if you closed it yourself. Go to the login page, sign in with the same email and password, and follow the instructions to reactivate. This does not work if Wise closed the account.
What happens to money sent to my Wise details after closing?
Your account details are deactivated and you will not be able to receive money, so update anyone who pays you before you close rather than after.
