How to delete your ChatGPT account permanently

How do I delete my ChatGPT account?
In ChatGPT open Settings, then Account, then Delete next to Delete account. Enter your email or phone number, type DELETE, and select Permanently delete my account. Your data goes within 30 days and the account cannot be reactivated.

Step 0: Save your data first. Request your data through the OpenAI Privacy Portal. Download and inspect the archive before deleting the account.

Step 0: Request Your ChatGPT Data Archive
Open the OpenAI Privacy Portal, request a data export, and download it before deleting. Check that the archive opens; account deletion has no undo window.
Cancel App Store and Google Play subscriptions first. Deleting your account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but it does not cancel one bought through Apple or Google. Those keep charging after the account is gone, and you will be cancelling them from a phone rather than from OpenAI.
If your email also runs an OpenAI Ads account, stop before you delete
This is the costly one. OpenAI states that if the email on your account is also used for an Ads account, deleting may leave you unable to access or manage it — and may not pause active campaigns, which carry on serving and accruing charges. You would be locked out of spending you can no longer stop.
Before deleting:
- Pause or end every active campaign in Ads Manager.
- Make sure another authorised user with the right permissions can reach the Ads account.
- If you are the only person with access, contact Support first. Do not delete and hope.
Delete your account in ChatGPT
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open your account menu and select Settings.
- Select Account.
- Next to Delete account, select Delete.
- Enter your account email or phone number and type DELETE when prompted.
- Select Permanently delete my account.
On iOS and Android the control sits under Settings → Data Controls → Delete Account instead. OpenAI keeps a separate article for each app.
If you cannot sign in
There is a second route that does not need access to the account:
- Open OpenAI's Privacy Portal.
- Select Make a Privacy Request.
- Select I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
- Select Delete my ChatGPT account and follow the verification steps.
You still have to verify the email address or phone number already on the account. If you can reach neither — or a deactivated phone-only account cannot complete verification — OpenAI Support can run an ownership review instead.
Work accounts cannot do this at all. Self-service deletion is unavailable in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Those are managed by whoever runs the workspace, and only they can remove the account.
What happens to your chats
- Your data is deleted within 30 days, apart from a limited set OpenAI may keep longer where the law requires or permits it.
- Deleted chats go within 30 days too — unless they were already de-identified and cut loose from your account, or are being held for security or legal reasons.
- Archiving is not deleting. Archived chats only leave your sidebar, and follow the same retention rules as any other saved chat.
- A deleted chat cannot be recovered, with or without the account.
Coming back afterwards
The account itself is gone for good — deleted accounts cannot be reactivated. The email address is not burnt, though: you can sign up again with the same address after 30 days, provided the old account was fully deleted rather than deactivated.
Your phone number does not get a clean slate. A phone number can verify the first API key for up to three accounts, and deleting one does not hand that allowance back — even though the number itself works fine for a new ChatGPT account after 30 days. If you are deleting specifically to start again on the API, you may find you cannot generate a key.
Two kinds of address can never be reused: one previously attached to an Enterprise organisation, and one disabled for breaking OpenAI's terms or policies.
You may not need to delete at all
- Only want the billing to stop? Cancel the subscription and keep the free account.
- Only want one conversation gone? Delete that chat rather than the account.
- Worried about what it remembers? Memory controls sit under Settings → Personalization.
- Want to change how you sign in? The email address and sign-in method can both be changed without deleting anything.
You can also keep using ChatGPT signed out entirely — one conversation at a time, with nothing saved to an account.
Common questions
Can I use the same email for a new ChatGPT account?
Yes, after 30 days, as long as the old account was fully deleted rather than deactivated. Addresses previously tied to an Enterprise organisation, or disabled for a policy violation, cannot be reused at all.
Does deleting ChatGPT cancel my subscription?
Only if OpenAI bills you directly. A subscription bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play keeps charging — cancel it on the phone before you delete the account.
Can I get my ChatGPT account back after deleting it?
No. Deleted accounts cannot be reactivated. You can create a new account with the same email after 30 days, but the history, memory and settings do not come back with it.
