How to delete your Notion account permanently

It is being the only admin that destroys a workspace, not owning it. Notion deletes any shared workspace where you were the sole admin — and it deletes it for everyone in it. Where a second admin already exists, you are simply removed and everyone else carries on. So the fix is often just promoting a colleague to admin, which is much less work than a full handover.

Export first — and start it well before you plan to delete

From Settings → Workspace → General → Export all workspace content, per workspace. You can export as HTML, Markdown, or CSV for databases.

An export can take up to 30 hours depending on the size of the workspace. This is not a thing you do on the evening you delete the account. Start it days ahead.

Then actually open the files. Notion notes that form views cannot be exported at all, that pages you lack permission to see are left out, and that teamspace settings can exclude content. HTML exports can include page and block-level comments; the other formats are thinner.

PDF export exists on Business and Enterprise plans but Notion is retiring it on 31 August 2026, so do not build a plan around it.

Delete your account

1. Open Settings from the sidebar.
2. Click your name.
3. Select Delete my account.
4. A window confirms which workspaces will be deleted with you — read it.
5. Type your account email, then click to permanently delete the account and those workspaces.

What happens to each workspace

• Private workspaces where you were the only member: deleted.
• Shared workspaces where you were the only admin: deleted, for everyone in them.
• Workspaces with other admins: you are removed, the workspace continues.
• Workspaces where you are only a member: you are removed, nothing else changes.

There is a 30-day window if you get it wrong. Notion keeps database backups and says it can restore a snapshot of your content from the past 30 days. Contact support through the in-app help menu. Do not treat this as a safety net to rely on — but if you have just made a mistake, ask immediately rather than assuming it is hopeless.

Published pages you shared to the web stop resolving, which breaks any link you handed out.

Cancel the subscription first

Deleting an account is not a billing action. If a workspace is on a paid plan, downgrade or cancel it before you delete — particularly where you are the billing owner, because a workspace that survives you may still be charging a card that is still yours.

• Check which workspace holds the subscription. Billing is per workspace, not per account, and people commonly pay for one while working mostly in another.
• Move billing to a colleague if the workspace continues without you, or the invoices keep arriving in your name.
• Download your invoices if you expense Notion. They go with the account.

What the export does not include

Worth restating, because the export is the whole safety net and it is lossier than people expect. Beyond the form views and permission gaps already noted:

• Links between pages become fragile. Internal links survive in a relative form inside a full workspace export, but a partial export leaves them pointing nowhere.
• Database views, filters and sorts are not content. A CSV gives you rows; the way you had arranged them is gone.
• Files and images are included in a full export but not in a Markdown export of a single page, which is the version most people try first.
• Synced blocks and linked databases export as their content at that moment, not as the relationship.

Do a test import before you trust it. Whatever you plan to move to — Obsidian, Confluence, a folder of Markdown — import a slice of the export into it while you still have Notion open beside it. That comparison is the only way to find out what did not survive, and it is much easier to discover with the original still there.

Integrations and shared links

Notion sits in the middle of other tools more than most, so deletion breaks things elsewhere:

• Published web pages stop resolving — check whether any of them are linked from a site, a job posting or documentation someone else maintains.
• Embeds of Notion pages in other products go blank.
• Connected integrations and API tokens you created stop working, which can silently break an automation a colleague depends on.
• Guests you invited lose access to anything shared only through you.

Promoting one colleague to admin solves most of this at a stroke, and takes a minute. If a shared workspace has any life left in it, do that rather than exporting and deleting.
